“The New York State Society of Certified Public Accountants (NYSSCPA) will present Michele Mark Levine, CPA of Brooklyn, with its Outstanding CPA in Government Award on May 19 at the Society’s 114th Annual Election Meeting and Dinner at the Marriott Marquis in New York City.
The NYSSCPA Outstanding CPA in Government is awarded to a CPA who has demonstrated exemplary service while employed by a government. Levine is the director of accounting services of The City of New York’s Office of Management and Budget and is the comptroller of several public authorities and local development corporations that issue debt to benefit New York City.
“Everyone on the committee is thrilled that Michele has been chosen for this award. Her career exemplifies service,” said Leslie Spurgin, CPA, chair of the NYSSCPA Government and Accounting Auditing Committee. Spurgin nominated Levine, who once chaired the same committee, for the award. “Michele brings intelligence, commitment and enthusiasm to the organizations she serves. She has been a dedicated and active member of the Government Accounting and Auditing Committee for many years, gracing us with her knowledge of government accounting, willingness to serve, and formidable wit and charm. We are grateful to have Michele on our committee and can think of no one more deserving of this award.”
Levine joined the NYSSCPA in 1993 and currently serves as a member of its Board of Directors, the Industry Outreach Task Force. She also serves on the Society’s Finance; and Government Accounting and Auditing committees. She is past chair of the Society’s Audit Committee, and served on the NYSSCPA Accounting and Auditing Oversight Committee and Code of Conduct Task Force.
Levine has also served as president of the New York State Government Finance Officers Association and as chair of its Committee on Accounting, Auditing and Financial Reporting. She is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and served on two committees there focused on increasing the participation of CPAs in government as leaders in establishing and maintaining standards for the effective and efficient use of government funds.
Levine has been a member of numerous task forces for the Government Accounting Standards Board and regularly attends and testifies at its board meetings on critical issues affecting government accounting standards.
Levine was graduated Summa Cum Laude by the State University of New York at Binghamton. After serving on the audit staff of Coopers & Lybrand in New York City, she earned a master of public administration degree from the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Administration at Syracuse University.”
