Michael Makarainen ’99 MPA has been named the budget formulation and reporting branch chief for the National Institutes of Health (NIH). In his role as the budget formulation and reporting branch chief he advises and supports the director on budget policy issues affecting the NIH, medical research community, and the public stakeholders.

Prior to his work at NIH, Makarainen served as the lead budget analysts for the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). As the lead budget analysts he was responsible for advising the Budget Director and Chief Financial Officer on budget and financial management activities and operations. In addition to serving as a team leader overseeing and managing other staff in all aspects of budget formulation and presentation, including budget program planning and analysis for all elements of the FDA budget.

From 2006 to 2013 Makarainen worked for the White House as an analyst for the Office of Management and Budget.
